How Google AI Mode Actually Works
- The model writes the answer first. Before it cites anything, AI Mode generates a statement based on what it learned in pre-training. The patterns, the concepts, the decision criteria — they're already baked in. Your page needs to match what it already "believes."
- Then it searches for verification. Google decomposes your query into thematic fan-out sub-queries — variations and angles the model considers important. These aren't random. They come from the Thematic Search patent.
- Semantic matching decides who gets cited. Google converts both the AI statement and your page content into embeddings, then measures the distance. Only pages that are mathematically "close enough" to the statement get the citation link. The math is the words — the same patterns the model learned.
- You must rank in search. AI Mode retrieves candidates from Google's organic results. If you don't rank, you're not a candidate. No ranking = no citation. This is still SEO.

The Answer Is In The Answers (But You're Looking At The Wrong Ones)
Most brands look at what AI said about them and try to reverse-engineer it. That's backwards. By the time you see the answer, the decision has already been made.
Google AI Mode works in two phases. First, the LLM generates a draft answer based on its pre-training — everything it learned from the internet about your industry, your competitors, and your category. This draft contains the model's "opinion": the criteria it considers important, the patterns it expects to see, the facts it learned.
Second, Google dispatches thematic fan-out queries — sub-queries generated from the draft — and uses them to search for pages that verify the statement. Your content is converted to embeddings and scored against the draft. If the semantic distance is close enough, you get the citation link. If it isn't, the next-closest match does.
This is described in two Google patents: the Thematic Search patent (US12158907B1, December 2024) covers how Google clusters search results into themes and generates sub-queries. - Interrogate the model. Ask 4–5 strategic probe questions about your product or service. "What should I look for in a [your category]?" "What questions should I ask before hiring a [your service]?" Copy the answers.
- Extract the criteria. Pull out every decision criterion — not generic advice like "good reputation," but specific entities and hard constraints. License numbers, pricing models, certifications, coverage areas, availability.
- Deduplicate and score. Consolidate across all probe answers. Criteria appearing in 3+ responses are high confidence. Keep the long-tail — unique insights are valuable even at low frequency.
- Find the gaps. Check your existing page against every criterion. Do you satisfy each one? Can you? Be honest.
- Place it prominently. Lead with a ~100 word paragraph that covers the critical criteria. Follow with headings and bullet lists for the rest. Knock off 20+ criteria in the first 200–300 words.
- Write for humans and machines (in that priority). The rest of the page is for your customers. Use headings. Add FAQs. Create individual pages for key criteria — they'll show up in the fan-out queries.
